The ‘Apostate’ United Methodist Church

May 1, 2017

Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them (Eph. 5;11)

The United Methodist Church (UMC) is part of the second largest Protestant denomination in the world. From a global perspective, they have nearly 2.8 million members. This denomination traces their heritage back to John and Charles Wesley.

The UMC will avow Christian tenets, by professing the fundamentals of the faith that have been historically accepted in Christendom. Although the UMC denomination operates under the guise of Christianity, their vernacular is nothing more than an illusory practice. The UMC is exuberantly drifting closer to hell then they may realize.

The UMC embraces putrescent doctrines, and without compulsion, they practice devilish works that do not merit the Father’s favor—but His wrath. This should cause objective observers to see the bastardization of this denomination, and pray that this false church repents.

This article will address a few unscrupulous distinctives of the UMC that will expose this denomination for their moral decay, and reproach they bring upon Christ:

Consecrating Licentiousness

As previously stated, the UMC affirms Christ and the Holy Bible, but they also affirm consecrating homosexual bishops. On July 16, 2016, Karen Oliveto—a married lesbian, was the first openly gay bishop to be consecrated at Paradise Valley UMC in Scottsdale, Arizona:

The first time she stood and faced a packed church as the newest bishop of the Western Jurisdiction, Karen Phyllis Oliveto was blessed with a resounding standing ovation.

On July 16, the pews at Paradise Valley United Methodist Church were filled with family, friends and supporters who cheered and danced with her to the recessional hymn, “Somos el Cuerpo de Christo, We Are the Body of Christ.”

As the first out lesbian to be elected a bishop, she is not receiving the same affirmation from across the denomination.

For any aspiring pastor to serve in the office of the church, “he” must be biblically qualified (1 Tim. 3:1-7). The UMC has not only substituted he for she, which the Bible forbids (1 Tim. 2:12), they have replaced integrity for iniquity, and purity for profligacy.

The UMC has unveiled their hypocrisy by consecrating a homosexual bishop. This clearly violates their standards (¶ 304.3 Qualifications for Ordination), since the UMC denomination prohibits ordaining practicing, self-avowed homosexuals [emphasis added]:

While persons set apart by the Church for ordained ministry are subject to all the frailties of the human condition and the pressures of society, they are required to maintain the highest standards of holy living in the world. The practice of homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching. Therefore self-avowed practicing homosexuals1 are not to be certified as candidates, ordained as ministers, or appointed to serve in The United Methodist Church.2

1. “Self-avowed practicing homosexual” is understood to mean that a person openly acknowledges to a bishop, district superintendent, district committee of ordained ministry, board of ordained ministry, or clergy session that the person is a practicing homosexual. See Judicial Council Decisions 702, 708, 722, 725, 764, 844, 984, 1020

2. See Judicial Council Decisions 984, 985, 1027, 1028

This is what happens when holiness is substituted for homosexuality, and when obeying the Lord is replaced with ordaining lesbians: People will do what is right in their own eyes (Judges 17:6).

Stipulating Child-Sacrifice

According to Holy Scripture, “…Children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward” (Ps. 127:3), and a gracious gift from God (Gen. 33:5). Sadly, the UMC has provided stipulations on when it is morally acceptable to assassinate God’s gracious gift [emphasis added]:

The beginning of life and the ending of life are the God-given boundaries of human existence. While individuals have always had some degree of control over when they would die, they now have the awesome power to determine when and even whether new individuals will be born. Our belief in the sanctity of unborn human life makes us reluctant to approve abortion.

But we are equally bound to respect the sacredness of the life and well-being of the mother and the unborn child.

We recognize tragic conflicts of life with life that may justify abortion, and in such cases we support the legal option of abortion under proper medical procedures by certified medical providers. We support parental, guardian, or other responsible adult notification and consent before abortions can be performed on girls who have not yet reached the age of legal adulthood. We cannot affirm abortion as an acceptable means of birth control, and we unconditionally reject it as a means of gender selection or eugenics (see Resolution 3184).

We oppose the use of late-term abortion known as dilation and extraction (partial-birth abortion) and call for the end of this practice except when the physical life of the mother is in danger and no other medical procedure is available, or in the case of severe fetal anomalies incompatible with life. This procedure shall be performed only by certified medical providers. Before providing their services, abortion providers should be required to offer women the option of anesthesia.

The UMC is blinded that abortion is not contrite, beautiful, or meek—it is cold-blooded murder. What is abortion? Abortion is a premeditated decision to annihilate a child when they are forsaken in what is supposed to be the safest place in the world—the womb of the mother.

There is no justification for killing a child (abortion). Young mothers need to be informed: When their child is being pulled from their birth canal, the abortionist will snatch their child, rip the limbs, and squash their baby like a loathsome insect. God hates the killing of innocent children (Prov. 6:16-19), and with wrathful rebukes, He will hold men and women accountable (Gen. 9:5-6; Ex. 21:14).

This is why young mothers, who are contemplating abortion, need to be reminded that abortion is a twenty first century holocaust, and those who approve of mothers aborting their children are accomplices to this grizzly act that conspicuously targets innocent children.

Infernal Reputation

The UMC’s reputation is far from being dignified; on the contrary, it is demonic. Consider the actions of Paul Woodall, a former licensed UMC pastor, which was published in 2003 in the UMC news archives [emphasis added]:

Members of Gove United Methodist Church in northwest Kansas are attempting to use the Oden argument in their effort to retain the church property and disassociate with the denomination.

The 125-member congregation voted May 9 to disassociate from the denomination because it had allegedly violated doctrinal standards by “allowing and condoning the following: same-sex unions, homosexual ordination, Sophia worship, goddess worship, Wicca worship, pagan practices, anti-trinitarianism, opposition to the virgin birth, and the deity of Christ.”

The conference filed a lawsuit June 5 to protect the property for members remaining in the United Methodist Church. A temporary restraining order froze the assets and ensured that the building could be used for United Methodist worship. That order has allowed Sandra Jellison-Knock, a laywoman, to lead worship services in Gove Church for 17 remaining members.

Meanwhile, Paul Woodall, a former licensed local pastor who has been dismissed by the conference, is leading the breakaway congregation that now meets in a nearby Baptist church...

Lee Duigon, of Barbwire.com, reports on why Woodall made these allegations:

“Because I saw it with my own eyes,” he told Chalcedon. “As a pastor, I encountered these things. So did members of this congregation. It was going on in a UMC church right down the road from us.

“We went there one night and saw what was supposed to be a ‘Christian healing service’ — with Tibetan prayer bells, a Baha’i prayer, and a chant. The chant went, ‘Come, Lord Jesus … Ommmm.’” [ “Om” is a Buddhist incantation.]

“We researched the matter and found a great deal of information on the Internet. We were shocked to find out this was going on in most of the mainline denominations today; and it was really bad in the UMC.

“So we left the UMC. That was the stand we took. And today our church [the Gove Community Bible Church] is exploding with new members.”

Christians must avoid being deceived. There may be professing Christians who will not leave the UMC, because they do not agree with all of the UMC doctrine. If this assertion is made, ask this question (illustration): How would you respond if one of your closest friends admitted to you that he was part of a terrorist group, but had no plans of leaving them, because he did not agree with all of their ideologies? The response to this question should be simple: Either you are with the United States, or you are against them. This should be the response of every American when dealing with terrorists. Professing Christians who associate with the UMC should be given a similar response—they are either with Christ, or against Him (Matt. 12:30), because friendship with the world is enmity against God (Jam. 4:4).

Exegetical Observations of 1 Cor. 5:9-11

How should Christians respond to the UMC when their sordid practices are irreconcilable with Scripture?  Consider the exegetical observation of 1 Corinthians 5:9-11 as an example of how to respond:

In 1 Corinthians 5:9, Paul exhorted the Corinthian church: “μὴ συναναμίγνυσθαι πόρνοις” (not to associate with sexually immoral people). The verb “συναναμίγνυσθαι” literally means to mix up together, keep company with, or to be intimate with one. It is important to note—that exegetically, Paul is not commanding the Corinthian church to isolate themselves from “all contact” with people in the world who are “πόρνοις” (sexually immoral). If this were the case, evangelism would be impossible, since this would have prohibited Christians from interacting with “all” sexually immoral people.

Christians with rudimentary knowledge of Scripture, must avoid the notion that Paul is prohibiting the Corinthian church in 1 Corinthians 5:9 from associating with all wicked people in the world. In verse 10, Paul said “οὐ πάντως” (not at all), which clarifies his position with a degree of certainty. When Paul warned the Corinthian church to not associate with sexually immoral people, he was not referring to the secular κόσμος (world) system that has no religious or spiritual basis—which are those that would never be permitted to join the church. This would have required Paul to “go out of the world.”

In verse 11, Paul clarifies his position on not associating with sexually immoral people, by referring to those benighted men and women who would bear “τις ἀδελφὸς ὀνομαζόμενος” (named a brother). In other words, Christians are not to associate with those who profess to be Christians, but live like impenitent devils. Additionally, Paul not only commands the Corinthian church to not associate with those who profess Christianity, but are sexually immoral—Paul also enumerates on several other sins (greed, idolatry, revilement, drunkenness, and fraud) that will lead impenitent sinners down the unbridled path that leads straight to hell.

In closing, the UMC’s actions are not only contemptuous towards Christ, they are also deceptive, since they profess to be Christians. This is why the UMC denomination must be rebuked, and adjured to repent. In addition, Christians must not associate themselves in any way with this apostate denomination. Sadly, there will always be professing Bible-believers that will ignore Paul’s command to the Corinthian church (1 Cor. 5:9-11), and they will instruct others to do the same. Take Paul’s advice, and not those who could not care less about “avoiding the appearance of evil” (1 Thess. 5:22).
